Our Name

The Name...

The process of determining a name for this new Christian community was long and difficult. Through reading, thinking, conversation, prayer and in the end, a return to scripture, this is what God birthed in my heart…

 

  • A Tribute to our Birth – With the mothering efforts of Watermark and Spring Lake Wesleyan, along with Lake Michigan and the other area waterways, keeping a water motif was important to us.  
  • Mystery of Christ – While there is nothing wrong with names like “Lakeshore Community Church”, we wanted the name to stand out and ultimately lead people toward the mystery of Christ.
  • Biblical Roots – When it came right down to it, this was the passage of scripture that birthed the name (Ephesians 3:14-19)...

 

      “14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

 

From this “the deep” seemed to perfectly accomplish everything we desired and what better to have as the lifeblood of a new church than the expansive love of God. While it is fairly common to feign depth, most of us are probably a bit more shallow than we would ever want to admit. The good news is that our depth as individuals and organizations is insignificant and a poor focal point when compared with the deep love of Christ!
